They currently compete in the NCAA Division I Big East Conference where they see some of the best teams such as Marquette University, Villanova University and Xavier University to name just three. The Pirates softball team saw their inaugural season in 1976 with coach Kathy Unger in which they finished with a winning season with a record of 8-4. They won their first Big East Conference Tournament in 2004 and again in 2005 to secure them automatic bids into the NCAA Tournament.
