The band formed in Kansas City in 1992, and quickly garnered a significant regional following. After the release of their debut EP Brooks/Released in 1993, Shiner began touring alongside a number of similar acts including Jawbox, Girls Against Boys and Season to Risk.
In 1996 Shiner released their first full-length album Splay, which caught the eye of Sub Pop Records. They were promptly signed to the label, releasing their albums Starless and The Egg in 2000 and 2002, respectively. Despite growing a dedicated cult following, Shiner took a hiatus beginning in 2003. Though there were rumors of a breakup, the band reunited in 2012 and continues to tour and record today. They released their first album in over a decade, Schadenfreude, in 2020. Shiner has been widely praised for its catchy riffs yet sophisticated instrumentation. They have often been described as “math rock” artists, as their songs belie complex and highly technical arrangements.
