Starting out on the Adelaide jazz circuit during the 1990s as a vocalist for the band Crisp, Australian songstress Sia Kate Isobelle Furler (December 18, 1975) only made it into the mainstream after she moved to the UK. Despite having released a solo album on home turf, once in London, she became a backing singer for Jamiroquai, which provided the platform for her debut UK release. Healing Is Difficult was released in 2000 and the single “Taken for Granted” the same year reached Number 10 in the UK.
Following on from this success, Sia worked with William Orbit, Massive Attack, and Zero 7, and the track “Breathe Me” from her sophomore effort, Colour the Small One (2004), was used in the finale of the 2005 drama Six Feet Under. Sia embarked on a successful 2006 tour and continued to work closely with Zero 7, notably on their Garden album, released the live album Lady Croissant (2007), and in 2008 recorded her fourth album Some People Have Real Problems.
After co-writing songs for Christina Aguilera's album Bionic, Sia began work on her own fifth album, which she released in 2010 under the title We Are Born. The album produced three singles - “You've Changed,” “Clap Your Hands,” and “Bring Night” - and was awarded gold status in Australia. She continued to write for other artists including Kylie Minogue, Beyoncé, and Rihanna. “Chandelier,” the lead single from 2015’s 1000 Forms of Fear, helped the album peak at Number 1 on the Billboard 200 and received four Grammy nominations. This Is Acting, Sia's seventh album, was released in 2016.
The album, a slightly different take on her previous records, features predominantly songs that she had written for other artists. “Cheap Thrills” became her first Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the album was nominated for a Grammy. A Christmas album titled Everyday Is Christmas saw the light in 2017, followed by a collaborative album with Labrinth and Diplo under the moniker LSD in 2019.
In 2021, Furler made her directorial debut with the film Music, which acted as a companion piece to her ninth album, Music – Songs from and Inspired by the Motion Picture. Featuring guest spots by David Guetta, Burna Boy, and Labrinth, the LP was released in the first part of 2021 and included the single “Saved My Life,” co-written with Dua Lipa.
