Hear the innovative bluegrass group perform live with Skyline tickets. Skyline is a bluegrass band founded by banjo player Tony Trischka that rose to fame in the ‘70s and ‘80s. The original lineup consisted of Trischka, Danny Weiss and Dede Wyland on guitar and vocals, with Larry Cohen on bass and Barry Mitterhoff on mandolin, though Wyland was eventually replaced by Rachel Kylam.
Skyline became known as one of the leading proponents of the budding “newgrass” genre, which involved jazz-infused riffs and heavy use of vocal harmonies. The band released their debut album Skyline Drive in 1977, receiving widespread praise for the members’ sophisticated musicianship and seamless integration of elements from other genres.
Over the next ten years, Skyline established themselves as one of the leading acts in bluegrass, and their newgrass stylings would set the tone for a generation of folk and country artists that would follow them. Though the band released its final album Fire of Grace in 1989, they continue to tour occasionally to a devoted following. Several band members have enjoyed other successful projects, most notably Mitterhoff, Cohen and Weiss with their band Silk City.
