Augeri was chosen by Michael Schenker of UFO to provide background vocals in 1984. He rode his success with Schenker into forming the band Tall Stories. In 1992, Augeri was nominated for the “Best Debut Male Vocalist” at the New York Music Awards. After Steve Perry left Journey in 1997, Augeri was chosen by Jonathan Cain and Neal Schon to take over on lead vocals.

The song “Remember Me” that appeared on the soundtrack for the movie Armageddon was the Journey recording debut for Augeri. He went on to release four albums in total with Journey. The 2005 album Generations was his last studio album with Journey.
