Swamp Gravy Play Tickets

See an iconic piece of Georgia with Swamp Gravy tickets. Swamp Gravy Play is Georgia's de facto folk-life play, according to the state's legislature. It is performed annually in March and October at Colquitt, Georgia's Miller County seat.

In 1990, Joy Jinks met Richard Owen Geer by accident at a conference on neighborhood development in New York City. She told him about her village's decline and residents' desire to preserve it for future generations; he offered his expertise which helped spark change all across Colquitt County! The name "Swamp Gravy" was chosen for the soup, which is made in southwest Georgia fishing camps and features whatever vegetables may be found, fried fish, a little fat, and anything else that might be available. County Story gatherers were tasked with recording narratives from the community's black and white members. The stories were transcribed and compiled into a script by Tennessee playwright Jo Carson after they were collected. The Swamp Gravy Sketches was a musical produced in the fall of 1992. It began as a one-time event staged at the Miller County Elementary School auditorium, which was jam-packed. It was a smash hit and featured an inexperienced cast of local citizens. In Georgia, Swamp Gravy was presented over thirty times in 1993. In 1994, the drama received an award from the Cultural Olympiad in Atlanta.
