In 1994 he moved to New York to pursue an acting career, training at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Shortly after graduation, he wrote a handful of plays including The Face of Liberalism and The Hot Month.
Mac quickly developed a reputation for his avant-garde plays and unconventional costumes and subject matter. His work has been compared to that of Charles Ludlam, Tiny Tim and David Bowie. Mac often tackles themes such as identity and conformity, nostalgia and change and humor in the midst of suffering.
Mac is perhaps most known for his 24-Decade History of Popular Music, a 24-hour concert that catalogs the musical history of the United States. The performance earned rave reviews and was a contender for the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Mac has received numerous awards and accolades, most notably the MacArthur Genius Grant, the Guggenheim Award and the International Ibsen Award.
