The band was formed in 1980 when members Steve Soto and Tony Brandenburg met at an Agent Orange concert. The Adolescents played their first shows at high schools and local venues around Redondo Beach and gained regional attention when their demo was promoted by KROQ DJ Rodney Bingenheimer. 

The Adolescents’ growing popularity in punk rock circles saw them signed to Frontier Records in 1981, through which they released their self-titled debut album. The album was one of the first hardcore punk records to see widespread distribution throughout the US and was one of the best-selling such albums in California. 

The band briefly split up over difficulties setting a feasible tour schedule but reunited in 1986 after a successful show in Long Beach. They released a number of albums through the rest of the decade, the most successful of which were Brats in Battalions and Balboa Fun*Zone.
