The ensemble formed in 1980 on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, taking its name from the Scottish island of Barra from which Clan MacNeil traces its roots.
The Barra MacNeils began performing locally while still young, with the majority of the members being teenagers and Lucy MacNeil was only ten. After building a regional following through weekend and holiday tours, the group attended Mount Allison University in New Brunswick, where they studied various forms of classical music.
In 1986 the Barra MacNeils released their self-titled debut album, though remained relatively unknown until the early ‘90s. In 1991 they rose to national attention when they won an East Coast Music Award, an achievement the group has repeated four more times since. The Barra MacNeils’ 1990 release Timeframe won the award for Album of the Year in 1992. The family group would go on to win the Group of the Year award in 2001.
