Together, they decide to collaborate on a new piece of art. The play's the second installment of McCarten’s Worship Trilogy, which explored religion, money and art. It premiered at the Young Vic in the West End of London in February 2022 and moved to Broadway in the fall. Director Kwame Kwei-Armah leads the two-person cast through the nuances that made Warhol’s life so significant. Paul Bettany captures his tics and quirky behavior perfectly with every gawky move and deadpan stare. Jeremy Pope effortlessly portrays the free-spirited Basquiat. Together, the two actors bring personality and depth to the stage that would be missing with lesser artists. Although the play is somewhat fictional, it is a moving performance with universal themes like art, identity and faith.
The production was so successful that plans were made to turn it into a movie. Bettany and Pope would again play Warhol and Basquiat. But for now, audience members who purchase The Collaboration tickets are treated to seeing them live.
