Taking their name after their political views the original lineup of the group consisted of Terry Buchan (vocals), Stevie Ross (guitar), Coline Eskine (bass) and Andy McNiven (drums). Influenced by groups like the Sex Pistols, The Exploited founded Exploited Records in 1980 and released their debut EP Army Life shortly after.

With their debut peaking at the number six spot on Indie/Independent charts, The Exploited tickets quickly started growing in popularity.  The group followed up its success with the release of its debut full-length album Punks Not Dead in 1981. A fanbase of loyal working-class punk rockers started forming as The Exploited found performances with groups like Anti-Nowhere League, Discharge and Chron Gen. Despite the major upheaval in their lineup, Buchan’s younger brother, Wattie, took over as the band’s frontman and continued to produce records. The Exploited produced eight studio albums ending with their 2003 release before ceasing the release of new music but continuing to perform live.
