Originally named the Ohio Untouchables, the band’s first members included vocalist and guitarist Robert Ward, bassist Marshall “Rock” Jones, Clarence “Satch” Satchell on saxophone, Cornelius Johnson on drums and trumpeter Ralph “Pee Wee” Middlebrooks. In their early years, they were best known as a backing band for the R&B vocal group The Falcons. The Ohio Players had a rocky start, disbanding and re-forming a few times with new members. In 1973, they had their big breakthrough with the hit “Funky Worm.” The single reached number 1 on Billboard’s R&B chart and was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.

In fact, Jay-Z sampled their single “Ecstasy” on his 1996 track “Brooklyn’s Finest.” Other artists who have been inspired by this legendary band include Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre and the Beastie Boys. The Ohio Players were inducted into the Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame in 2013. In 2017, they released “Reset,” their first new single in almost 30 years.
