Thomas learned to play guitar at the age of 11, following it up with singing in various choirs while he was in high school. He was playing acoustic sets by the time he was 15, self-releasing his first CD called The Blur of Motions in 2000.
It was at a solo show that fellow vocalist Becca Flinn approached Thomas and formed the beginnings of what would later be The Spill Canvas. Although the band would lose members, including Flinn, over the next year, Thomas stayed on and began pursuing the band full time. They released their first five-song CD entitled Concept EP in 2003, followed by their first widespread album, Sunsets and Car Crashes, in 2004. The band has toured with other bands such as Motion City Soundtrack, the Goo Goo Dolls, Switchfoot, You Me at Six, The Plain White T’s, and others.
