Considered as one of the original American third-wave ska bands, the group got their start back in 1981 when founded by Rob "Bucket" Hingley in New York City. Born in England, Hingley did not originally have the intention of pursuing a career in music, only moving to the States in order to manage a Forbidden Planet comic book store. However, during his stay in the U.S., he became dismayed when he realized that the 2 Tone ska music that was such a cultural staple in his home country was practically unheard of in the American music scene. Inspired to rectify this, he assembled several employees from the store he managed and created the first version of The Toasters, releasing their debut single, "Beat Up," in 1983.
Utilizing an intriguing fusion of ska with pop, rap, R&B and calypso, it would not take long for The Toasters tickets to start finding an audience. However, the demand for ska music was still relatively minor in the States, scaring off any major record labels from signing them out of fear that the genre would never find a domestic market. Not ones to let others decide their fate for them, Hingley took matters into his hands and formed his own label, Moon Ska Records.
Over the years, Moon Ska would go on to grow into the largest independent ska label in the country, expanding The Toasters national profile in a way skeptics never before imagined. Still touring and thriving today, Hingley and his crew are as committed as ever to spreading their love of ska wherever they can, so be a part of the fun and watch The Toasters at a venue near you.
