The brothers grew up in Boulder Colorado with parents who introduced them to American roots music. Oliver spent 12 years touring with the band King Johnson, while Chris spent two decades as part of the band Medeski Martin & Wood. The brothers realized they should form their own band after performing a show together in 2001.

After recording a few of Oliver’s songs, the pair landed a recording contract with Blue Notes Records. Their first album together, Ways Not To Lose, made NPR’s “Overlooked 11” in 2006. They released several more albums with Jano Rix performing backup instrumentals, and their 2016 album One Drop of Truth was nominated for the Best Americana Album Grammy award.
