After moving to Nashville in 2005 to study audio engineering, Gilbert briefly participated in the punk rock outfit The Trampskirts. Following the band’s breakup in 2009, she founded Thelma and The Sleaze with friends and fellow musicians Emily Zimmer and Jacki Macri. The trio garnered their first serious attention in 2012 in the wake of a performance opening for the high-profile act, The Black Belles.
Through their rigorous touring schedule and two critically acclaimed EPs, Thelma and The Sleaze developed a considerable following. By 2016 they had opened for well-known artists such as Charles Bradley and The Eagles of Death Metal. Despite a brief hiatus that began later that year, Thelma and The Sleaze reunited in 2017 to release their debut full-length album Somebody’s Doin’ Something. They have since collaborated with Alabama Shakes, Aye Nako and Tristen Gaspadarek, among others.
