Sondergard was born in Holstebro in 1969 and showed a gift for music at an early age. As a young man, he trained under Gert Mortensen at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, simultaneously performing with the European Union Youth Orchestra. In the early 90s, Sondergard served as a percussionist for the Royal Danish Orchestra, shortly afterward joining the faculty of the Royal Danish Academy of Music. 

In 2005, Sondergard made his first appearance as a conductor, leading the Royal Danish Opera in a performance of Poul Ruders’ Kafka’s Trial. The performance was well-received, and within four years Sondergard had been made principal conductor of the Norwegian Radio Orchestra. In the years that followed he held a string of illustrious posts with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Orchestre National de France and Minnesota Orchestra.
