He is known across the world for his work with the New Flamenco group the Gipsy Kings, with whom he has sold nearly 20 million albums. 

Baliardo was born in Montpellier to a musical family, as his uncle was the famed guitarist Manitas de Plata. He showed an interest in music at a young age, learning to play the Spanish guitar as a boy. As a young man he formed the Gipsy Kings with his brothers and two cousins, and the group quickly became a leading act in the rumba and flamenca movement of the '70s. 

Despite little success in their first and second albums, the Gipsy Kings achieved worldwide fame through their eponymous third album in 1987. The album charted for more than 40 weeks, one of the few Spanish-language albums to do so in the US. The group became famous for their hits “Un Amor,” “Bamboleo” and “Djobi Djoba” in particular.
