Its members were regular contributors to studio albums by 1970s musicians like Steely Dan and Boz Scaggs. While some claim that their name came from the dog “Toto” in “The Wizard of Oz,” drummer Jeff Porcaro cites his habit of writing “Toto” on the band's demo tapes in the recording studio. Bassist David Hungate reminded the band that the Latin phrase in toto translates to “all-encompassing”. The band adopted the name since it described how the members appeared on many records before joining together. In 1982, Toto released their triple-platinum certified Toto IV. The singles “Rosanna” “Africa” and “I Won’t Hold You Back” reached the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In total, Toto IV earned Toto six Grammy Awards.

“Africa” has since been covered by many artists including the alternative rock band Weezer. Weezer’s cover also features Weird Al Yankovic in the music video version. Toto was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in 2009. They celebrated their 40th-anniversary tour in 2019.
