Troy Andrews born January 2, 1986, better known by his stage name Trombone Shorty, is an American musician, producer, actor and philanthropist from New Orleans. Known primarily as a trombone and trumpet player he also plays drums, organ and tuba. He has worked with many big names in the industry from rock, pop, jazz, funk and hip hop. The younger brother of the trumpeter and bandleader is James Andrews and the grandson of the singer and songwriter is Jessie Hill. Other musical family members are Glen David Andrews and the late Travis Trumpet Black Hill and since 2009 has toured with the band Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue.
Troy Andrews was born and raised in New Orleans in the Treme neighborhood participating in band parades as a child, becoming a bandleader by the age of six. In 2005 Andrews and the band were featured on Lenny Kravitz’s horn section during a world tour which also featured Aerosmith. In 2006 Andrews began working with producer Bob Ezrin and U2 at Abbey Studios which led to the band performing with U2 and Green Day during the reopening of the New Orleans Superdome after Hurricane Katrina for the Monday Night Football pregame show.
The Trombone Shorty Foundation has evolved from Andrews Horns For School Project, a collaboration with New Orleans Mayor which helped schools in New Orleans receive quality instruments donated by Andrews family personally. The mission is to preserve and perpetuate the unique musical culture of New Orleans by passing down tradition to future generations of musicians.
