From 2002 to 2005, UCF played softball in the Atlantic Sun Conference. The Knights took home their first conference championship during their final season in the Atlantic Sun Conference. They defeated Troy to win the 2005 ASUN Conference Championship. The win also earned UCF their first spot in the NCAA tournament.

UCF softball played in Conference USA from 2005 to 2013. Since 2013, UCF has been a member of the American Athletic Conference. Renee Luers-Gillispie was the first coach for the Knights. She led UCF to their second NCAA tournament appearance in 2008. UCF earned an automatic bid after defeating Houston in the CUSA Conference Championship. The Knights knocked off the number one seeded Florida Gators during the 2008 NCAA tournament. Gillispie retired following the 2018 season. She amassed 522 wins in 17 seasons.
