The UNLV Rebels is one of college football’s newest teams, with the first game being played in 1968. The Rebels have quickly become one of college football’s most exciting teams. The team began as a Division II Independent team and ended its inaugural season with an 8-1 record under head coach Bill Ireland. UNLV football tickets began to sell like crazy. Over the next few years, Ireland’s Rebels would post less-than-impressive season records like in the 1972 season where the Rebels went 1-10, ultimately causing Bill Ireland to step down as head coach.

In 1973, Ireland was replaced by Ron Meyer who immediately turned the team around, posting an 8-3 record in his first season as head coach. The Rebels’ success continued into the 1974 season, where the team put up its only undefeated season.

After Ron Meyer’s departure in 1976, the team was again in search of a new head coach. The position would be filled by former Boise State coach Tony Knap, who would continue the Rebels’ prior success and post a 9-3 record in his first season.

After ten years as a Division II independent football program, the Rebels made the jump to Division I in 1978 where they have remained since. Their first major victory in Division I football came with a 33-6 victory over Colorado State.

Throughout its history, UNLV has played in four bowl games with a record of 2-2. The team has one conference title and an overall record of 243-351-4. In the grand scheme, this is still a very young team with a ton of football to play in the future.
