Kotis had the idea for the musical while traveling abroad in Europe and encountering pay toilets for the first time. The backdrop serves as a medium through which Kotis offers his criticisms of contemporary politics, culture and social structure.

A highly decorated play, the original Off-Broadway production of Urinetown won a Clarence Derwent Award and two Lucille Lortel Awards.
