Born in Sai Ying Pun in Hong Kong in 1960, Chau began learning to play guitar as a teenager. He went on to study mathematics at National Taiwan University, all the while cutting his teeth as a singer at local bars and coffee shops. After graduation, Chau began pursuing a music career in earnest, finding work writing pop songs for other artists at Rock Records. 

Soon Chau’s talents attracted attention, and Rock Records agreed to release his debut album The Last Waltz in 1985. The singer rose to national fame, however, with the release of his platinum-selling album You Make Me Happy and Sad in 1991. His follow-up albums The Flowery Heart and Music Brings Us Together both went platinum as well, making Chau a pop star almost overnight.
