Home ice for the Black Hawks is the 3,000-seat Young Arena. The Black Hawks were founded in 1962 as a semi-professional team and competed in the USHL when it was a senior ice hockey league. Waterloo won the USHL title multiple times from 1964 to 1968 and then became the Iowa Stars, the farm team for the Minnesota North Stars.

Head coach P.K. O’Handley arrived in 2002. Under his leadership, the team turned around, winning their first division championship in over 20 years. The next season, Waterloo took home their first championship since 1979, capturing the USHL Clark Cup Championship. The team has now won multiple Anderson Cups and also division and conference championships. Multiple players have been drafted to the NHL after playing with Waterloo, including forward Jason Blake.
