Homans sang in a number of local choirs and glee clubs as a youth, and at ten years old began learning to play the bongos and harmonica. As a young man, he was drafted to fight in the Vietnam War, where he gained experiences that would greatly inform his later lyrical themes. Upon returning to the US Homans contributed to one of his earliest releases, the Merry Airbrakes compilation of protest songs.
Over the next decade, Homans would work as a farmer and truck driver, occasionally forming local blues bands and embarking on small-scale tours. In 2004 he released his acoustic album Up Close and Personal, for which he was nominated for Best New Artist Debut at the W.C. Handy Awards.
