The two bandmates began playing music together and chose their respective pseudonyms, Gene and Dean Ween, while they were still in middle school. For the first ten years of Ween’s existence, the band consisted only of Freeman, Melchiondo, and a DAT tape machine which provided backing tracks. During this time, Freeman and Melchiondo independently released six cassette tapes full of their own music. As Ween started out, they landed the opportunity to open for a number of high-profile bands in the alternative circuit such as They Might Be Giants, Butthole Surfers and GWAR.

Ween tickets were the key to the band’s eventual mainstream success when a scout for the label Twin/Tone caught them opening up for alt-rockers Skunk toward the end of the 1980s. One thing led to another, and Ween’s debut album GodWeenSatan: The Oneness was released in 1990. Two years later, Ween would sign to Elektra and make their major-label debut with Pure Guava. This record featured their highest-charted single in “Push th’ Little Daisies” which landed the band their first exposure on MTV.

With nine studio albums released between 1990 and 2007, multiple songs and references in the Spongebob franchise, a number of performances on late-night shows including the Last Call with Carson Daly and Late Night with David Letterman and a large cult following, Ween has surely taken its distinct brand of eccentric alternative rock to the highest level.
