The school joined the Big 12 Conference in 2012. The team’s home meets are held at the WVU Coliseum.

West Virginia women’s gymnastics began in 1974, with inaugural head coach Nanette Schnaible who led the team to a 5-2 record in the team’s first season. Linda Burnette-Good took over the team in 1975 and would lead the team for the next 37 years. In her tenure, the team would have a record of 644-263-4 and win eleven conference championships.

Other All-American Mountaineer women’s gymnasts include Kristen Quackenbush, who was named All-American in 1994, 1995 and 1996 as well as being named the 1997 AAI American Award Winner for the national collegiate gymnast of the year.
