He learned to play drums and guitar growing up, giving early performances at local church fairs.
Benoit turned to the blues as a young man, playing alongside well-known acts like Henry Gray and Raful Neal at Baton Rouge’s Blues Box club. In 1992 he released his debut album Nice and Warm, which was a runaway success. The years that followed saw Benoit earn comparisons to greats like Albert King and Jimi Hendrix.
The guitarist then founded the Whiskey Bayou Records label, which quickly became a prominent label in Louisiana. Acts signed to the label like Damon Fowler, Jeff McCarty and Eric Johanson tour with Benoit as the Whiskey Bayou Revue.
