The members are Jeff Tweedy, John Stirratt, Glenn Kotche, Mikael Jorgensen Nels Cline and Pat Sansone. The group formed following the breakup of their former band, Uncle Tupelo.
Wilco released their debut studio album titled A.M. in March of 1995 to mixed reviews. Initially, the band was underwhelmed by the response the album received but after it circulated, A.M. began to pick up traction and eventually reached #24 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart, it ranked thirty-fourth in the Village Voice’s critic's poll and earned the band their first record contract with Reprise Records. Demand for Wilco tickets increased as the band set off on a two hundred date tour to support the album.
The band’s second album titled Being There was released in 1996 to a much better reception among critics. The album reached #73 on the Billboard Album charts and placed fourteenth on the Pazz & Jop Critics Poll. The first single from the album titled “Outtasite (Outta Mind)” reached #39 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart and #22 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. These were significant improvements from their previous album.
Wilco released nine more albums between 1999 and 2019. They’ve come a long way from their humble beginnings. The band has toured all over the world and has collaborated with some of the biggest names in the industry. Artists like Jim O’Rourke and bands like R.E.M. have made contributions to Wilco’s albums.
