The present iteration of the orchestra was launched in 1964 under the direction of violinist Dorothy Baumwoll and oboist William Barrison. The group played for a number of years under the name “Susquehanna Valley Symphony Orchestra” before reverting back to its traditional title in the early 80s. The WSO has seen many notable music directors since, including Grammy Award-winning member of the Empire Brass Quintet, Rolf Smedvig. By the early 2000s, the group had earned acclaim from both the League of American Orchestras and the National Endowment for the Arts.
