It is one of three leagues that make up the Canadian Hockey League (CHL). The Ontario Hockey League and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League are the other members of the CHL. Twenty-two teams from Canada and the United States compete throughout the regular season for a chance to qualify for the Ed Chynoweth Cup.
Teams will play a 72-game regular season. Eight teams from each conference can qualify for the WHL Playoffs. The top three clubs in each division will make the postseason. The remaining spots will be awarded to the next highest-placed clubs in each conference. Each playoff series will be a best-of-seven contest. There are no byes in the playoffs. The winner of the WHL Playoffs is awarded the Ed Chynoweth Cup and is invited to compete for the Memorial Cup. The winners of the other leagues in the CHL join the WHL winner in a tournament to decide the winner of the Memorial Cup.

After the admission of American-based teams, the league rebranded to the Western Hockey League. Teams such as the Portland Winterhawks and the Seattle Thunderbirds are US members of the Western Conference.

Winnipeg Ice Schedule
The WHL hockey season begins in mid-September and runs through the end of March. The battle for the Ed Chynoweth Cup kicks off the first weekend after the conclusion of the regular season. Winnipeg Ice tickets may include appearances in arenas like the Art Hauser Centre, home of the Prince Albert Raiders. United States teams that compete in the WHL include the Everett Silvertips and the Spokane Chiefs. All available tickets will be displayed in the Winnipeg Ice schedule.
