The first wrestling team for Wisconsin was fielded in the 1910-11 season. The first coach for the Badgers was E.B. Nolte, who led the team in 1912-13 to their first winning season. The next year Fred Schlatter coached the team’s first Big Ten Champion in wrestling.

 Another significant first for Wisconsin was three wrestlers being named All-American in 1929, including Ferdinand Hammer, Leland Haywood and Selmer Swenson under the leadership of coach George Hitchcock. Barry Davis coached the team for 25 years.
