Getting her start at open mics around Southern Oregon, Mendoza met bassist and vocalist Ben Meyercord and Y La Bamba was formed.

The group's debut album, Alida St., was released in 2008 and was a lo-fi self-produced effort. In 2011 the band teamed up with producer Chris Funk of The Decemberists and recorded their second album, Lupon. Following a few years filled with extensive touring and multiple more albums, they released the game-changing album, Ojos Del Sol, in 2016. The album bore some of the group's most popular songs, including the title track and “Orca”, and was named one of NPR’s Top 50 Albums of 2016. The 2019 effort, Mujeres, charted at number 7 on Billboard’s Latin Pop Charts.
