Yamandu Costa is a guitarist and composer from Brazil primarily known for his work with the Brazilian seven-string classical guitar. Raised in Passo Fundo in the early 80s, Costa started playing guitar as a child. He was heavily influenced by his father, who led The Frontiersmen band and had studied under Argentinian virtuoso Lucio Yanel.
As a teenager, Costa developed an interest in Brazilian folk music, as well as in folk styles from Uruguay and Argentina. He encountered the work of Baden Powell de Aquino, Tom Jobim and Raphael Rabello, artists who would heavily influence his later sound. At seventeen Costa gave one of his earliest performances in Sao Paulo at the Cultural Circuit Bank of Brazil.
The artist has since mastered a variety of styles including bossa nova, chorinho and chamame. His late 2010s sophomore album Vento Sul was named Album of the Year by the Sao Paulo Association of Art Critics.
