The band formed in 1977 in Dayton Ohio. Roger Troutman, who had been performing solo for several years previously, started the band with several of his brothers and other family friends who were talented musically. They released their eponymous debut album in 1980, which received widespread popularity for its hit single “More Bounce to the Ounce.”

The band followed up with Zapp II two years later, and this album also gained recognition and became certified gold. The album featured heavier electronic techniques, contrasting in style to the band’s first album. Zapp III gained similar recognition, and the group has released four additional albums since then. With the resurgence of hip-hop in the 90s came the opportunity for this band to provide influence for new wave funk bands.

Though this group disbanded in 1996, they have begun touring again in the past decade, traveling around the United States to perform their old hit songs. You can see them live in concert when you purchase Zapp tickets.
