Pitt State football has a long history.  The program dates back to 1908, with the first head coach being Albert McLeland. The 1920s saw the program begin to see success, including an undefeated season under then-head coach Garfield Weede in 1924, with the team being declared Kansas Collegiate Athletic Champions.

The team won its first MIAA championship in 1957 under coach Carnie Smith, being undefeated that year. That year, the team won the Holiday Bowl. Smith led them to another undefeated championship year in 1961, this time winning the Camella Bowl. Smith coached from 1949 to 1966 and the stadium was later renamed in his honor.

Chuck Broyles would lead the team in his first year as coach to a 10-0 regular season and win two games in the division playoffs. He would go on to win the NCAA Division II Football Championship in 1991.

Coach Tim Beck also won the NCAA Division II national championship in 2011. The team has won the most games of any Division II school in history. Besides national championships, the team has won over 25 conference championships.
