REO Speedwagon was formed in 1968 through a chance encounter between two University of Illinois students, Neal Doughty and Alan Gratzer. The pair would eventually meet guitarist Joe Matt and bass player Mike Blair to complete the original lineup of the band. Through the remainder of 1968 into 1970, the band toured college campuses, local clubs and bars mainly playing cover songs until they began to write their own music and were eventually signed to Epic Records in 1971. While on Epic Records, they released their debut self-titled album and REO Speedwagon ticket sales began to heat up. Though this album did not achieve the success the band hoped for, it did contribute to their growing fan base.

The band released their second album titled R.E.O. T.W.O. in 1972 to a growing regional fan base but still hadn’t achieved the mainstream success they hoped for. The band wouldn’t begin to see mainstream success until the release of their third album, Ridin’ the Storm Out in 1974. The release of this album marked the first time the band would appear on the Billboard music charts.

The band would continue on their upward trajectory with the release of two more albums, Live: You Get What You Play For (1977) and You Can Tune a Piano, But You Can’t Tuna Fish (1978). These albums would go on to be certified gold and platinum-selling records.

By 1980 the band was in full swing and with the release of their album titled Hi Infidelity, they became household names releasing chart-topping singles like “Keep On Loving You” and “Take It on the Run.”

Throughout the 1980s and 90s, REO Speedwagon dominated the rock & roll scene, selling over 40 million albums, they have been nominated for one Grammy and have toured all over the world.
