William Smokey Robinson Jr. born February 19, 1940, is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, and former record executive. Smokey was the founder of the Motown vocal group The Miracles, where he produced and wrote music for the group. Robinson was raised in Detroit, Michigan, his uncle gave him the nickname Smokey Joe when he was a child. His interest in music led to him forming a doo-wop group named the Five Chimes. Interestingly he and Aretha Franklin lived a few houses from each other in Belmont, and the two have known each other since he was as young as five years old.

In 1957, Robinson met the songwriter Berry Gordy after a failed audition for Brunswick Records. Robinson had a notebook with 100 songs he had written and Gordy was very impressed with the songwriting and even more by the vocals of Robinson. This chance meeting led to a great business partnership and many hit records. Smokey was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1983.
