The group was founded in 1968 by soul singer Russell Thompkins Jr. The Stylistics released their song “You’re a Big Girl Now” in 1970, their first top ten R&B hit single. 

The group went on to release several charting successes through the rest of the 70s, including the number two pop hit “You Make Me Feel Brand New.” In 1975 they tried their hand at disco, releasing “Hey, Girl, Come and Get It” to much commercial success. That same year they would release their pop song “Can’t Give You Anything But My Love,” which became a number one smash hit in the UK. 

After a brief time in the early 2000s pursuing a solo career, Thompkins reformed the group under the name The New Stylistics with Jonathan Buckson, James Ranton and Raymond Johnson. After an appearance on PBS’ My Music series, the New Stylistics began to again tour widely.
