Originally formed in 2003, Trampled by Turtles was conceived as a side project by founder, singer and guitarist Dave Simonett. After most of Simonett’s music gear was stolen out of his vehicle, Simonett pieced a band together based around acoustic instruments, as his acoustic guitar was one of his last remaining pieces of equipment.

Out of Simonett, bassist Tim Saxhaug, banjo player Dave Carroll, mandolinist Erik Berry, fiddle player Ryan Young and cellist Eamonn McLain, most of the Trampled by Turtles members did not have a bluegrass background. Young was a metal drummer, and Saxhaug performed in jam bands. This confluence of genre helped create Trampled by Turtles’ signature fast-paced sound. Trampled by Turtles tickets were sold in conjunction with the release of their first album Songs from a Ghost Town in 2004, but it wasn’t until the band’s fourth release Duluth that the group was embraced by the bluegrass community. Duluth was released in 2008 and reached number eight on the Billboard bluegrass chart.

Between 2004 and 2018, Trampled by Turtles released nine studio albums, an impressive five of which appeared on Billboard’s bluegrass chart. Even more impressive, 2010’s Palomino, 2012’s Stars and Satellites and 2018’s Life is Good on the Open Road all reached the coveted number one spot. With a number of festival spots, television appearances, and high-profile music placements, Trampled by Turtles has helped bring bluegrass to the forefront of our musical consciousness.
