Interestingly, Criterion Theatre was founded by George C. McKay, Sr. McKay previously served a one-year sentence in 1923 for bootlegging and violating the Volstead Act. He was sentenced by U.S. District Court justice John Andrew Peters and served his term at the Bangor Jail. After he was released, McKay went on to become an upstanding Bar Harbor citizen, volunteering for his local church and serving as a local host for such events as the Civilian Conservation Corps, the Relief Association and the Depression-era Unemployed, to name just a few.
Upon acquiring Criterion Theatre, McKay worked to renovate the facility. The historic landmark receives its character with art deco décor, a floating balcony, a state-of-the-art Graybar inter-phone system and finally, its basement, aptly titled Speakeasy.
