The museum was first called the Aspen Center for the Visual arts when it opened on June 16, 1979, in the former Hunter Creek Power Plant, which had been constructed in 1888. The inaugural exhibition shown was American Portraits of the Sixties and Seventies, which featured works by various artists, including Chuck Close, Richard Avedon, Andy Warhol and others. A broad and diverse array of exhibitions was staged for the first three years, including one-person shows by artists such as Robert Rauschenberg.
