Margaret “Maggie” McIver, known as the “Barras Queen,” who was famous for renting out barrows to local merchants, would rent out a hall around Christmas time to throw a party for her customers and their families. One year, she was not able to rent a hall and had the Barrowland built. The Barrowland opened on Christmas Eve, 1934.
Enjoy a great concert or dance experience with Barrowland tickets. Fire ravaged the building in 1958 and it had to be rebuilt, reopening on Christmas Eve, 1960. The building has large halls used for weekend markets covered with a large weatherproof hall. A large neon sign spelling out Barrowland covers the front of the building.
The ballroom has been used as a concert hall recently, with a standing room capacity of 1,900. It is famed for its acoustics and its sprung dance floor. Simple Minds filmed the video for their single “Waterfront” at the hall in 1983. The Northern Irish punk band Stiff Little Gingers has performed there every St. Patrick’s Day since 1992. They also recorded the live album Best Served Loud in 2016 at Barrowland to commemorate their 25th year performing there.
