The complex opened July 1, 1968, and was called the Donnybrooke Speedway at the time. The facility was the first one in the area utilized by the SCCA as well as being sanctioned by the NHRA. The inaugural event was an NHRA Top Fuel Dragster race, which was won by Doc Holladay. The speedway ran a two heat United States Auto Club Indy Car event in 1969.

Funny Car events began to be held on the raceway in the 1970s, including the Crown Auto Funny Car Championships. In 1982, the first national event was held at the raceway. The dragstrip has built a reputation as being one of the quickest and fastest tracks in the world. In 2005, Tony Schumacher reached the speed of 337.58 mph, which has been referred to as “the fastest quarter-mile time ever.” Funny Car records were set on the dragstrip in 2016 and 2017.
