Britt was a photographer who moved to Jacksonville, Ore., in 1852. At the time, Jacksonville was a mining camp. He used his camera to chronicle the growth and history of the town. He was also critical in the opening of Oregon’s first winery with his diligent planting of fruit trees throughout Jacksonville.

A conductor from Portland, Ore., named John Trudeau settled upon the former estate of Peter Britt as the desired location for a music festival. With the help of his friend Sam McKinney, they used the natural acoustics of the hillside to construct a makeshift stage during the summer of 1963. A chamber orchestra performed the first concert on August 11, 1963. Until the construction of a pavilion in 1978, Britt Festival Pavilion & Gardens tickets were only available for classical music concerts. The Performance Garden was added in 2014 to accommodate small pre-concert music and children’s events.

The Britt can hold roughly 2,200 guests. There are two main sections in the pavilion. Fans can purchase reserved Britt tickets for benches that sit in front of the stage.
