Brooks Stadium broke ground on July 30, 2002, and had the official dedication ceremony a year later on September 6, 2003, to honor the Brooks family, who started the Hooters chain restaurants. The stadium was designed by McMilan Smith & Partners and had a construction cost of $59 million to build. When first built the stadium had a capacity of about 6,400 spectators, but since numerous expansions, over the years it now houses over 21,000 after Coastal Carolina joined the Sun Belt Conference, where the NCAA requires all FBS programs to maintain an average of 15,000 spectators per game to qualify.
