The name of the club can be roughly translated as “The Dramatic Lovers Social Study Club.” During probation, tunnels were dug under the club and neighboring houses to run liquor. Though the tunnels have been filled, a covert door in the basement contains artifacts and mementos of that era.

In 1996, Eric Uecke became the owner of the club and made it an independent live music venue, featuring bands such as The White Stripes, Queens of the Stone Age and others. Kelsey Kaufmann, the current proprietor, started working as a bartender in 2011 and took over management in 2016.
