The nickname comes from the fact the surface sits two feet below sea level and the geography of the location and in 1988 the nickname stuck with the yearbook using it.
The construction for the stadium began in 1970 and was finished in September of the following year as it replaced McNaspy Stadium. The stadium opened with a capacity of 26,000 and over the years and continuously expanded its seating up to 41,264. The largest attendance ever recorded was in September of 2009 when the Ragin’ Cajuns went toe to toe against Southern University with an attendance of 41,357. In June of 2021, The Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center bought naming rights for the field and helped fund a $15 million renovation.
