The performance venue Detroit Symphony Orchestra Hall is the home of the fourth oldest orchestra in the United States, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, or DSO, and is well known for the clarity of its acoustics. The hall is part of the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center and was placed on the list of National Register of Music Places in 1971.
The hall was built especially for the DSO to accommodate the demands of Ossip Gabrilowitsch, who was not satisfied with the acoustics of the Detroit Opera House and balked until a new venue was built. The construction, designed by C. Howard Crane of the hall was started on June 6, 1919, and lasted only six short months. The world premiere of the hall was on October 23, 2019.
